VA Community Care
Acupuncture for Veterans in Katy, TX
At Hulu Health, we’re honored to support Veterans with acupuncture and wellness care. Acupuncture may be covered through VA benefits when clinically necessary and approved by your VA care team.
How VA Community Care Works
VA community care means VA may pay for care you receive from an in-network community provider. In most cases, you must receive VA approval before your appointment (except certain urgent or emergency situations).
H2: Getting Started (Referral & Authorization Required)
To schedule a VA-covered visit, you’ll typically need an approved VA referral/authorization:
-
Talk with your VA provider about acupuncture and whether it’s appropriate for your care plan.
-
If community care is approved, VA will issue an authorization.
-
Once you have authorization, call our office to schedule.
📞 Call 832-321-3590 and we’ll help you confirm what information we need to book.
What Acupuncture May Support
Many Veterans use acupuncture as part of an overall care plan to support:
-
Pain and tension management
-
Headaches and migraines
-
Stress regulation, sleep support, and overall wellness
Acupuncture is often provided as a series of treatments, and your plan is tailored to your goals and response over time.

VA Referral & Authorization + Scheduling
First Step: Referral & Authorization (Required)
To receive care through U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Community Care, Veterans typically need an approved referral/authorization before an appointment can be scheduled (except certain urgent or emergency situations). Without a VA referral, you may be responsible for the full cost of care.
Three Ways an Approved Referral/Authorization May Be Generated
1) VA determines you need community care.
Your VA care team assesses your clinical need and, if appropriate, issues a community care referral/authorization.
2) You contact your VA Medical Center (VAMC) Community Care office.
VA will review your eligibility and, if approved, may refer you to an in-network community provider and support the scheduling process.
3) Additional care is needed beyond what was originally authorized.
If your community provider determines you need services beyond the original authorization (for example, more visits), they may submit a Request for Service (RFS) using VA Form 10-10172 to request additional/extended authorized care.
Second Step: Scheduling Your Appointment
Once your referral/authorization is approved, there are generally three scheduling pathways:
1) VA Direct Scheduling (VA schedules for you)
VA may schedule your appointment directly with a community provider (sometimes using External Provider Scheduling).
2) Contractor Scheduling (TriWest scheduling on VA’s behalf)
In CCN Regions 4–5, TriWest Health Care Alliance serves as the third-party administrator and may coordinate scheduling for authorized community care.
3) Veteran Self-Scheduling (you schedule with the provider)
Some referrals allow you to self-schedule. Make sure you have (or will receive) your authorization letter, and follow the instructions in your referral packet/portal. After you schedule, report the appointment details back to VA/your contractor within the required timeframe.
Important: Referrals are time-sensitive. If an appointment isn’t scheduled within the timeframe stated in your referral instructions, the referral may be returned and a new consult may be needed.
